The European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma) has issued a statement to support the smooth implementation of Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) requirements under the Markets in Financial Instruments Regulation (Mifir). The LEI is used to identify legal entities in a financial transaction and under Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, or Mifid 2, and Mifir, as of January 3, 2018, an investment firm can no longer carry out a transaction for a customer who does not yet have a LEI code.
